The roots of Western Swing began in at the Crystal Springs Dance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas and grew to small towns throughout the lower Great Plains throughout the s, growing from Fort Worth house parties and West Texas ranch dances where fiddlers and guitarists played for dancers.

Waltzes and ballads were interspersed among faster songs if the dancers, who would dance two-step or round dances, became tired after faster numbers.

The session rosters for Wills' Texas Playboys recordings show the addition of legendary steel guitarist Leon McAuliffe, who took Bob Dunn's hot-steel guitar to a stratospheric level.
