In an exclusive interview with The Observer, the dental nurse from Yorkshire described how she dodged armed police and border patrols while navigating with a compass as she made her desperate attempt to get home. The nightmare began after Payne left home in Castleford four months ago for a backpacking trip to Thailand and Australia. She used the money saved for her wedding to fund the trip.

But instead of lazing on exotic beaches, she found herself crammed into a cell with 24 other prisoners in the notorious 'Bangkok Hilton', the rat-infested women's jail in the Thai capital where violence among inmates is rife and suicides are commonplace. It had all started so promisingly last December.

After kissing her mother and year-old brother goodbye, she took one last look at the redbrick houses of her home town and the giant smoking towers of a nearby power station before flying out to the Far East. Her days were spent snorkeling and sunbathing. Relaxed and tanned, Payne decided to travel to Bangkok on her way to the north of the country to see the bridge over the River Kwai, immortalised in the film starring Alec Guinness about British prisoners of war forced to build a railway crossing for the Japanese.

After arriving in Bangkok, she had hoped to meet up with traveller friends in the city's Khao San road, a haven for European backpackers lined with cheap guesthouses. Waiting for a room to empty, she recognised James Gilligan, a year-old from her home town. She had seen him around at home and they had mutual friends. A graphic designer, Gilligan was also taking time out to travel.

He was also struggling to find a bed for the night and the pair agreed to share the only twin-bedded room available. She waited for friends downstairs, but they did not turn up. Gilligan and Payne both turned in for the night. What happened next is still traumatic for Judith. James was panicking and I didn't know why.

He told me he had bought drugs and he was trying to hide the package, but there was no window to throw it out of. It all happened in a flash: the police burst in with guns and James just held this package out and said: "Here, it's mine.

I thought, well, at least he has admitted it, but then they handcuffed us together and took us to the police station. I was crying, I didn't know what was happening. Interrogated and put in a holding cell overnight, a shocked and frightened Payne was attacked by prisoners who tried to steal her diamond earrings.

An officer allowed her to e-mail her mother Valerie. But I still thought I'd get out in an hour or so. Gilligan and Payne were taken to court. No one could explain what was happening because no one spoke English. Within hours, Judith had been forced to strip in front of 30 other prisoners; she was intimately searched and handed a brown prison sarong to wear. When the door swung open to the cell, 74 women in a narrow brick and iron-barred room stared at her.

One woman spoke English, but as soon as I refused to give her money she would pretend not to hear me when I talked to her. She had no idea how the routine worked or how to get food or water. Then we had to sit under an open-sided building until it was time to go to back to the cells.

I thought I'd rot away there. The richest ones could sleep near the door; the poorer you were the closer to the toilet hole you had to lie,' said Payne.

Wealthier prisoners could also become warders. The guards gave them sticks to beat their fellow prisoners and many would also abuse inmates sexually.

It was very frightening. Old women and the mentally ill were all shoved in together and often beaten. I saw a pregnant woman being battered by sticks. It was terrible to watch. One woman was really sick and died in our cell; the guards told her family she had slit her wrists, but it was because they didn't get her a doctor. With no one to talk to, Payne could only sit in the sweltering heat, swatting at the flies and mosquitoes.

A woman from the British Embassy came to visit her and gave her two books: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and the true-life tale of a woman imprisoned for killing her mother. Gilligan was waiting for Payne when she was released. The pair were ordered to stay in Bangkok until the trial date could be set.

A Thai official indicated that they could face up to 10 years in prison. Neither could face that prospect. Less than a fortnight before their court case, they decided to flee the country. After a last meal with friends in their guesthouse, they packed as much as they could carry: a hammock and mosquito net each, a small Primus ring , dried noodles, water bottles. Then they boarded a train heading for the border with Malaysia. The hour train journey put nearly miles between the terrified pair and Bangkok.

One came and stood at my elbow so I picked up the Lonely Planet and pretended to read it as if we were any other tourists. I couldn't even focus on the words, I was just waiting for him to grab my shoulder.

At the end of the line James and Judith walked to the border, fearful of every car and every footfall behind them. But their ordeal was not over. The alarm had been raised in Bangkok and the fugitives knew Thailand had an extradition agreement with Malaysia.

They decided not to risk walking along the main road to Kuala Lumpur, which was lined with police and army checkpoints, and instead walked through the jungle towards the capital. The jungle was just buzzing with noise. In a different context it would have been fascinating, but we were so scared. Insects the size of teacups, giant spiders, lynx and Asian tigers, poisonous cobras and bone-crushing pythons inhabit it. At night they hung their hammocks from trees, wrapped themselves in mosquito nets and fell into fitful sleep.

At one point we came to a river and had to swim across and walk on in wet clothes,' she said. Their hunger overcame their fear of poisoning, and they ate exotic-looking fruits they found on the forest floor. Eventually, the forest cover petered out, and they hitched a lift to Kuala Lumpur. We went straight to the British Embassy to get temporary passports so we could fly out. We had to wait a week and that was pretty nerve-racking, wondering if the Thais would catch up with us,' said Gilligan.

During the ordeal, the pair became close and are now romantically involved. Safely back at home, Payne nodded in agreement: 'I am only now starting to take it all in, I can't believe we managed to get out and I know I'm lucky to be alive. There are still a lot of beautiful places out there we want to see.

By Kim Willis. Vanessa Goosen was six weeks pregnant when she was thrown into Lard Yao prison. Former Miss South Africa finalist Vanessa Goosen had it all - a great job, a loving boyfriend and a baby on the way. But she made a foolish mistake that cost her everything. Vanessa, now a motivational speaker, said: 'I was 21 years old when I started a business with my boyfriend of four years, Felix.

We were doing so well that I'd flown to Thailand for a six day business trip to scout for new fashions and suppliers. At the time of her trip, Vanessa was six weeks pregnant and a successful model.

I loved the catwalk and dreamed of making it as an international model. Once there, morning sickness made Thailand unbearable for the expectant mother. As I queued to get through security at the airport in Thailand, my thoughts were on meeting Felix in Johannesburg.

I couldn't wait to see him. A security guard asked Vanessa to open her bags, then starting rummaging through her belongings. The security guard whipped a knife from his holster and took a book out of Vanessa's bag, eyeing it suspiciously. He sliced down the spine of the book and as he did, white powder erupted everywhere, floating to the floor. Vanessa with her daughter Felicia in jail in Thailand, where the little girl was born and spent the first three years of her life.

The guard had a sadistic look on his face. He was excited. As I was led away to an interrogation room, memories flashed through my mind. Days earlier, Jackson, a friend of Vanessa's from back in South Africa, had called her while she was resting in the hotel. He asked if I minded bringing them home. Vanessa agreed to do Jackson the favour and met with Jackson's brother. I had no reason not to trust Jackson. Just a naive 21 year old thinking I was doing a friend a favour.

Vanessa finally, reluctantly, gave care of Felicia to a friend back in South Africa. I thought long and hard about who to ask. None of my family were appropriate', she says. Under interrogation at the airport, Vanessa tried to explain to the security guard that the books were not hers.

The guards tried to X-ray Vanessa but she begged them to understand that she was pregnant. I'd never even seen drugs before in my life. I was handed paperwork, but it was in Thai, so I refused to sign it. Handcuffed, Vanessa was led to a police station where she was given a humiliating cavity search and thrown in a cell.

Guards kept shouting at me in Thai. Every day I thought Felix would send a lawyer or the Embassy would send someone. After ten days Vanessa was taken to court, her hands cuffed. Now it was a mugshot. A magistrate read out a long judgement - all of it in Thai. Vanessa's daughter Felicia was born in jail and spent the first three years of her life there - but was told she would be taken away and rehomed in an orphanage if she couldn't find care elsewhere. Christine told me they were fighting for my release.

Knowing my friends even knew what had happened gave me something to hope for. But still Vanessa had no word from Felix. It was June before he visited. He told me Jackson had disappeared. Not long after visiting, Felix wrote to tell Vanessa he couldn't afford a lawyer to fight her case. But my girls were still fighting for me, I had to believe they would rescue me. Vanessa was moved to the mother's wing with other pregnant convicts. There were no beds, each woman slept on a towel on the cold, hard floor.

Labour lasted 30 hours and I wasn't allowed any pain relief. Convicts don't get those kind of luxuries. I suddenly had a reason to smile. Felicia was my family and she was right here with me. Vanessa says Felicia's birth in prison was a ray of sunshine in her grey, monotonous world. But that joy was not to last. Felicia settled into prison life. She'd never seen life beyond the prison walls.

But having her with me gave me such joy. Because Vanessa was a new mother, her death sentence was reduced to a life sentence. I owed her my life.

I taught her about colours, numbers and the alphabet. I told her about South Africa. She'd translate what the guards were saying. When Felicia was nearing her third birthday, Vanessa was told Felicia be put in an orphanage if she couldn't find someone to take her away before her third birthday.

None of my family were appropriate. Left: In happier times, Vanessa was a celebrated beauty queen in South Africa. Right: Vanessa, left, led a charmed existence before she was unwittingly led into a drug trafficking incident. She had a husband, Hilton, and a daughter, Lerell, of her own. I knew it was a huge ask.

She'd be disrupting her life for a baby who knew nothing beyond these prison walls. Melanie was Vanessa's only hope and she said yes without hesitation. Melanie and Hilton flew to Thailand in October and spent a week visiting the jail every day so Felicia could get used to them. Felicia warmed to them instantly, but although she could understand English, she only spoke in Thai. But I had no choice - her birthday was approaching and I knew Melanie would give my daughter the life she deserved.

The only way I could get her to leave me behind was to promise her I would see her soon. Vanessa's only hope of freedom was a Royal Pardon. After five years in jail she submitted an application. They told me to try again in two years.

Felicia left prison the day of her third birthday. Every drawing and letter I sent Felicia had the same promise: "Mummy will be home soon. Christmas should always be spent with family, surrounded by love and happiness. Not being made to scrub the walls of your cell by an angry prison guard.

After 15 Christmases in Lard Yao Prison I lobbied for the prison to allow us to have a special Christmas church service, which was granted. Some would bring chocolate that was split into 20 pieces, others a can of baked beans. We prisoners reminisced about how we celebrated the day in our home countries. We'd pretend to eat roast meats, seafood and rich puddings with fine bone china and silver cutlery - when in reality we were eating prison slop with plastic forks.

In May , Vanessa was unexpectedly told by prison officials that she was free. And that year, the King had pardoned me - it had taken several months for the news to reach me. Vanessa's release date was one day before Felicia's 16th birthday. I had so much to say to my loyal, wonderful friend. But three months before Vanessa was released, Melanie had a heart attack and died. There was still so much I had to say to Melanie. I wanted to hug my best friend. Whenever she'd visited me in Thailand, wire mesh had separated us.

On the 30th October , I was given back belongings I hadn't seen in 16 years and taken to the airport. I had no idea whether Felicia would recognise me or even want me around.

But Felicia met Vanessa at the airport, wrapping her arms around her mother. Vanessa was finally reunited with her daughter Felicia back in South Africa, 13 years after she was taken away from her. I went to the shops and lapped up all the choice and colour. My friends were all married with kids and careers. I had nothing to show for my life.

Vanessa now uses her experience to help others, giving motivational talks about the repercussions of drug trafficking.
