Like many other people, the original "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie has a very special place in my childhood.
Even if the movie wasn't all that great, it was fantastic for what it was trying to be. Now we're in , where our beloved turtles have been given a whole new lick of paint with a straight-up reboot and have the daunting task of winning the long time TMNT faithful over. What is the fundamental premise of the TMNT? They're wise-cracking, pizza-eating, energetic teenagers that just so happen to be mutated ninja turtles that fight crime.
The Turtles are goofballs, but in , it's a little bit of a different story. There's still the humor, the jokes and comedy, but now the turtles are massive 6-foot-tall, muscle-bound turtle-men who have a very gritty feel to them, and when they're not in action, look way too real and off-putting. If they weren't green and didn't have shells, the Turtles would literally just be your average hulking action heroes.
This franchise is about giant turtles who do martial arts. It's a goofy concept. Giving the Turtles a gritty makeover seems to miss the appeal of the characters in a fundamental way.
However, despite the poor design choice of the Turtles, they really are a joy to watch. If you can withstand the eyesore that the Turtles' design brings, then there is still a lot of old school TMNT magic to revisit. What is also very disappointing is that the Turtles are no longer fighting crime, even though that's what is essentially believed, but a basic supervillain.
Yes, the ultimate TMNT villain Shredder is in the film, but not only does he not get the screen time or proper development he deserves, he's basically cast aside as a secondary villain to the "I'm rich but have to get richer" villain that is Eric Sacks.
It's disappointing to not be able to see the Turtles fight their way through dozens of foot soldiers like the old days, with all of the witty remarks during combat intact.
There are still funny lines sputtered during combat, but the action scenes are so limited that there's simply not enough of it. In , April O'Neil was the hot shot news reporter that made the amazing discovery of the Turtles and she developed an amazing bond with them.
She was important to the story no doubt, but wasn't essential in the Turtle's story. Fast forward to , and now April is nothing but the center of attention for everything in the movie, even essential back story information about the Turtles. Not every action movie has to have an epic story line or to feel gritty and real.
TMNT is supposed to be all about the opposite, but the unfortunate presence of producer Michael Bay is clearly felt in the direction of the film. From the camera shots, to the serious tone of the action to the slow motion parts, this movie has too much of a focus on seriousness, when it should be taking itself very lightly.
Like I stated earlier, despite the off-putting design and feel of the Turtles, they still are a lot of fun to watch and are the lifeblood of the film.
What is missing, however, is the strong character development of the Turtles. There isn't enough down time in the movie to really get to know them. Some of the best moments of the film were in the form of the Turtles hanging out, making jokes, eating pizza and training together. That chemistry was not felt as strongly in the new TMNT and the movie just assumes that you all ready know who and what each Turtle is all about.
But all you really find out is that one is a jokester, one's a tech geek, one's the leader and one has anger issues. But with Megan Fox and Michael Bay attached, the poor look and design of the Turtles, along with the general off-setting feel of the film, I had to come in with lower expectations. There are some wonderful action sequences and the Turtles bring enough pop to the movie to make them likable and fun, but sadly, my low expectations were met in this failed attempt the reboot a childhood classic.

Both the movie and the TV show were key in this upcoming generation's development and coming of age. I recently watched this movie again for the first time in a decade, and yes it was cheesy and tacky.
However, that doesn't make it bad in anyway. There are some complex issues going on beneath the surface here. First, this movie was released close to the peak of crime wave that occurred across the country in the early 's. Second, there is a definite connection between Splinter and Jesus when he is nailed up to a wall and talking to his "sons". Many reading my comments may laugh because, lets face it, the idea of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is hilarious, but the movie spoke to a specific generation at a specific time and as a period piece it can still be appreciated.
Even if the movie makes no sense go with it and watch it for the ridiculous 's dialogue Its funny, enjoy! Enjoy a night in with these popular movies available to stream now with Prime Video.

Instead of being Hamato Yoshi's mutated pet rat, Splinter was a mutated Hamato himself. The Foot Soldiers changed from human ninjas to an endless supply of robotic grunts, allowing large numbers of them to be destroyed without anyone dying this was a very important decision in terms of the show's child audience; excessive violence would have alienated parents of children, the show's target demographic.
The animated Krang, however, was instead an evil warlord from Dimension X. Baxter Stockman , whose race was changed from black to white , was rewritten as a shy and meek lackey to Shredder, later mutating into an anthropomorphic housefly. During the final two seasons of the show, the lead villain switched to Lord Dregg, an evil alien overlord bent on world conquest by trying to distract the public into believing that the Turtles were the enemy instead of himself.
There were 28 new syndicated episodes for season 4 and only 13 of those episodes aired in These episodes were delayed because of animation or scheduling problems. Starting on September 8, with a different opening sequence , the show began its run on CBS. The CBS weekend edition ran for a full hour until , initially airing a few Saturday-exclusive episodes back-to-back. Also, a brief "Turtle Tips" segment aired between the two episodes, which served as public-service announcement about the environment or other issues.
After , the show was reduced to just a half-hour and only eight episodes per season were produced, grouped into a "CBS Action Zone" block that also featured WildC. The series ran until November 2, , when it aired its final episode.
Its enormous popularity gave rise to its numerous imitators, including the Battletoads , Cheetahmen , Wild West C. In addition to the American series, a Japan-exclusive two-episode anime original video animation OVA series was made in , titled Mutant Turtles: Choujin Densetsu-hen.
It featured the Turtles as superheroes , that gained costumes and superpowers with the use of Mutastones, while Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady gained supervillain powers with the use of a Dark Mutastone.
The second episode was created to advertise the Metal Mutants toys in which the characters gain Saint Seiya -esque mystical metal armor that can transform into beasts.
In —, the Turtles starred in a live-action television series called Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation that directly follows the events of the first three movies. A fifth turtle was introduced, a female named Venus de Milo , who was skilled in the mystical arts of the shinobi. Other connections to the feature films include the fact that Splinter's ear was cut, the Foot Soldiers were humans, and the Turtles lived in the abandoned subway station seen in the second and third movies.
It later moved to " The CW4Kids " block. The series was co-produced by Mirage Studios, and Mirage owned one-third of the rights to the series. This series lasted until , ending with a feature-length television movie titled Turtles Forever , which was produced in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the TMNTs franchise and featured the Turtles of the series teaming up with their counterparts from the series. The series ran for five seasons. Nickelodeon announced a new 2D animated series based on the franchise, which debuted on September 17, The version is characterized by lighter humor.
The Turtles have appeared in six feature films. The Turtles were played by various actors in costumes featuring animatronic heads, initially produced by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. The game features a large list of animals, including elephants and sparrows, that are available as mutant player characters.
In , Dark Horse Miniatures in Boise, Idaho, produced an attendant set of lead figurines ; unlike later incarnations, the bandannas on the store's display set were painted all black before the multicolored versions were released to help younger readers distinguish between the four characters other than their weaponry. Palladium allowed the license to lapse in , in part due to declining sales stemming from the "kiddification" of the animated and live-action incarnations to that point.
However, Palladium's publisher, Kevin Siembieda , has indicated a potential willingness to revisit the license given the franchise's recent moves closer to its roots. During the run of the TV series, Playmates Toys produced hundreds of TMNT action figures , along with vehicles, playsets , and accessories, becoming one of the top collectibles for children.
The marketing vice president of Playmates, Karl Aaronian, was largely responsible for assembling the talented team of designers and writers, which in turn, helped germinate continued interest in the toy line.
Never before in toy history did an action-figure line have such an impact for over two decades, generating billions of dollars in licensing revenue. Playmates continue to produce TMNT action figures based on the animated series.
The film TMNT also gave Playmates a new source from which to make figures, while National Entertainment Collectibles Association produced a series of high-quality action figures based on character designs from the original Mirage comics.
In , a new toy line and a new classic toy line from Playmates were announced to be released. As the video game series progressed, and the Ninja Turtles' popularity began to decline in the mids, the video games changed direction. In , Ubisoft acquired the rights for TMNT games, beginning with a game based on the animated feature film , along with a distinct game for the Game Boy Advance similar in style to the Konami arcade games. The game is described as a third-person, team-based brawler.
The campaign will be playable either single-player or co-op and will have an original story written by Tom Waltz, IDW comic writer and editor. The game used many key mechanics from the Palladium system.
The game itself is limited to which martial arts are available, but a separate book, Ninjas and Superspies , increased the amount available to a choice of 41 martial arts styles. During the height of their popularity, the Turtles had a number of food tie-ins. Shreddies used to give out TMNT toys in their boxes when the cereal advertising was still geared toward children.
One example of a TMNT prize was rings featuring a character on the cartoon There was also green Ninja Turtle ice cream with different toppings according to which turtle flavor one ordered. Chef Boyardee also released a canned pasta with the pasta in the shapes of the four turtles. To capitalize on the Turtles' popularity, a concert tour was held in , premiering at Radio City Music Hall on August A pay-per-view special highlighting the concert was shown, and a studio album was also released.
Since the tour was sponsored by Pizza Hut in real life, many references are made to their pizza. As part of a cross-marketing strategy, Pizza Hut restaurants gave away posters, audio cassettes of "Coming Out of Their Shells", and "Official Tour Guides" as premiums. The original show of the tour was released on video with a making of video also released. After the main show was done, they posed for pictures and signed autographs. They also appeared during the Easter parade dancing to their single "Pizza Power!
Once the Turtles broke into the mainstream, parodies also proliferated in other media, such as in satire magazines Cracked and Mad and numerous TV series of the period. The Turtles engaged in a greater amount of overt violence in the pages of the early Mirage comic book series by Eastman and Laird.
As the TMNT were introduced into the mainstream, they were radically redesigned. In issue 19 of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , the creators published an editorial addressing any possible concerns of readers as a result of this. It stated, in part: "We've allowed the wacky side to happen, and enjoy it very much. The lyrics were also changed, such as changing "Splinter taught them to be ninja teens" to "Splinter taught them to be fighting teens". The policies also had other effects, such as editing out use of Michelangelo's nunchaku which were at the time banned by James Ferman , chairman of the BBFC , from appearing in films and generally toning down the usage of all the turtles' weapons.
In Italy, Spain and Portugal, they kept Michelangelo's nunchaku but the "TMHT" logo could be seen in the intro, as it was not edited to reflect the title in each of those translations. In Spain the cartoon was originally aired in regional TV channels and thus had different dubs in addition to Castillian : Galician and Catalan ; [ citation needed ] in the Galician version, the title As Tartarugas Mutantes "The Mutant Turtles" was used.
The Italian and European Portuguese dubs also had few edits. In the Republic of Ireland , the series was initially known as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the intro sequence was unedited when it debuted on RTE Two with the airing of the second season in September In —, episodes were aired in their original US unedited form.
However, when the live-action movie came out in , the Ninja of the title was kept even in the UK. In time, nunchaku scenes were retained in previously-censored movies such as those of Bruce Lee. The same went for the PAL releases of the early video games, which had Michelangelo's weapon of choice fully visible and usable.
By the time the TV series premiered, these censorship policies had been abolished, and no changes have occurred in the content of any incarnations of the show since. This 3-Disc set contains all the episodes of Seasons 1 and 2 and 4 episodes from the final season, as well as a 1-Disc DVD with the first few episodes of Season 1.
This release features the original, unedited episodes under the "Ninja Turtles" title, and also marks the first time the show has been released and left uncensored in the UK.
Due to various movie and television deals, the various TMNT films and television series have split between various companies, with Mirage Studios having retained copyright and trademark until October 19, , at which point the rights for the entire TMNT franchise were sold by co-creator Peter Laird to Nickelodeon.
The series itself is owned by Wolf Films, with home entertainment rights residing with Lions Gate Entertainment , and until recently, syndication rights belonged to Nickelodeon's former corporate sibling CBS Television Distribution. The second animated series — was a co-production between Mirage Studios and 4Kids Entertainment.
The first two films were copyrighted by the UK-based Northshore Investments. The third film was copyrighted by Clearwater Holdings. Entertainment in association with The Weinstein Company. Dave Green replaced Liebesman as the director. Initially, Mirage allowed employees and freelancers to retain the rights to characters they created for the TMNT Universe but had never licensed for media and merchandise outside comic books.
Eventually, due to the difficulty of keeping track of everyone's rights, Mirage made TMNT character creators sign retroactive work-for-hire contracts. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Wikipedia
It is the sixth film in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film series , the second and final film in the reboot series and a sequel to the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Principal photography on the film began on April 27, , in New York City. A reboot of the film series was later announced in As Shredder is transferred between prisons alongside Bebop and Rocksteady by corrections officer Casey Jones , the Foot Clan attack their convoy.
Despite the turtles' interference, Shredder escapes when Stockman uses a teleportation device. Shredder is hijacked mid-teleport, winds up in another dimension , and meets the alien warlord Krang , who reveals his plans to invade Earth.
Pursued by the Foot, she is rescued by Casey, who later meets the turtles, but the vial is taken into police custody. However, Michelangelo overhears and tells Raphael , which enrages Raphael and leads to a fierce argument between him and Leonardo. After recovering the second component of the machine, Bebop and Rocksteady go to the rainforests of Manaus , Brazil , for the final component.
The turtles follow them and board Rocksteady and Bebop's jet in midair. In the resulting battle, the jet is critically damaged after Rocksteady fires a tank -mounted Mark 19 grenade launcher , and crashes into a river, though Bebop and Rocksteady are ultimately able to escape with the component.
Shredder and Stockman complete the device and open a portal to Krang's dimension through which his war machine, the Technodrome , begins to emerge.
Shredder betrays Stockman and his men take him to their headquarters in Tokyo. When entering the Technodrome, Krang likewise betrays Shredder, freezing him and locking him with his collection of other defeated foes. While Leonardo agrees, Raphael shatters the vial. April arranges a meeting between the turtles and Vincent, and convinces her that they are not enemies. With the help of the police, the turtles are able to jump from the Chrysler Building and confront Krang aboard the still-assembling Technodrome.
They defeat Krang when Donatello short circuits Krang's robotics body. The turtles are able to hurl the ship's beacon back through the portal, taking Krang and the rest of the Technodrome with it, as April, Casey, and Vern shut the portal down. Bebop and Rocksteady are back in custody, while Stockman remains at large.
Vincent offers to introduce the turtles to the public, but the turtles opt to keep their existence a secret while still helping as they always have. On top of the Statue of Liberty , the turtles celebrate their victory over the vanquished Krang. Dean Winters appears as a bartender. Supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio has a cameo appearance. Judith Hoag , who previously played April O'Neil in the original film , plays a cameo as Rita, April's boss, in a deleted scene.
Jane Wu plays Jade, a police officer. After the film exceeded box office expectations, Paramount and Nickelodeon officially announced a sequel was greenlit, and set to be released in theatres on June 3, , with plans to incorporate the characters Casey Jones and Bebop and Rocksteady.
He stated the characters are "fundamentally different" from one another, but that Casey did resemble Oliver from older versions. Todd Freeman , who played the role in the film. On April 2, , Steve Jablonsky revealed that he would compose the music score, replacing Brian Tyler from the first film. Farelly and Williams recorded additional dialogue for the film in February The toys debuted at the Toy Fair in February. On February 17, , Paramount released four character posters featuring the four turtles.
Will Arnett debuted the first official clip from the film at the Kids' Choice Awards , on March 12, In the U. It had a limited opening on Friday, July 1 and opened wide the following day. As a result, Out of the Shadows became the ninth consecutive Hollywood import film to debut atop the chart beginning from May 6, It opened in key markets such as Germany and Austria on August 11 as well as Japan on August 26, The site's critical consensus reads, " Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is a slight improvement over its predecessor, but still lacks the wit or anarchic energy of the comics that birthed the franchise.
Glenn Kenny of The New York Times gave the film a positive review writing, "This movie is, it happens, easier to sit through than the film", while also adding that "The 3-D action, overseen by the director Dave Green, is not wholly incoherent. The production values showcasing new mutants and many gear-heavy extra-dimensional machines undreamed of in any actual engineering philosophy are ultrashiny. And there are even a couple of amusing, albeit unmemorable, sight gags and one-liners.
Like a well-plated but nutrition-free meal, it registers on the senses while being bad for you. Peter Hartlaub of San Francisco Chronicle gave the film a negative review, writing, "Your year-old is going to love this film.
Then he'll grow up and wonder what he was thinking. For the under 12 set, that's fine. For the rest of us? It's something to actively avoid. On June 20, , it was reported that Paramount Pictures will once again reboot the series with Bay, Fuller and Form returning to produce the film and Andrew Dodge writing the script.
